Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a low and a high enema?

The terms refer to the intended reach of the fluid in the lower bowel. The appropriate method should only be selected on medical indication.

Are there contraindications?

Yes. Certain acute abdominal conditions, active bleeding, suspected perforation, recent surgery and other conditions may make an enema unsafe. A clinician should assess suitability.

Does it hurt?

It should not be painful. Gentle technique and lubrication are used, and the procedure is stopped if significant pain occurs.
